  • What is it like to work at Mercer?
    Mercer is a firm of people in the people business linked through shared values. Of course, actual work experiences vary from office to office, as each location tends to have its own personality. But typically, it’s a stimulating environment where people are committed, energized and anxious to be first with new solutions for our clients. We have fun, work hard, and find satisfaction in what we do. We like to share our talents with our communities and to ensure that our personal interests and our families are always a top priority. Mercer has also adopted a year-round “Appropriate Dress” policy. This policy is designed to allow you to select between Business Casual Dress or Business Dress; whichever is appropriate for your work on a given day.   • Where do you have office locations?

  • How do I apply for a job with Mercer?
    We use an online application process for all vacancies at Mercer. If you find a vacancy you’re interested in applying for we’ll need you to complete a few steps online in order to submit your application.
  • There isn’t a vacancy that matches my requirements. How do I send my CV speculatively to you to hold on file?
    Unfortunately we’re unable to hold CVs on file or accept speculative applications, however if you can’t find a role that meets your requirements at the moment, please register for Jobs by Email. The Jobs by Email function will ensure that any new vacancies matching your requirements are emailed to you as soon as they become available so that you can apply.
  • I have a disability which may require special adjustments to be made throughout the recruitment process. What should I do?
    Please contact ukrecruitment@mercer.com if you feel a disability may impact any stage of the recruitment process and we will work with you to ensure that we take the best course of action possible.
  • When will I hear back following my application?
    You will receive email confirmation when your application has been submitted successfully.
  • Can I apply for more than one vacancy with Mercer?
    Yes you can, however do be aware that often vacancies will progress through the recruitment process at different rates. We are unable to keep a position open unnecessarily and may require you to make a difficult decision.
  • Can I apply for a job by email or post?
    Mercer require that all applications are made online. However if you are prevented from submitting an online application for a specific reason, please contact the Recruitment Team on ukrecruitment@mercer.com to discuss this.
  • I have made an error in my application, how can I amend it?
    Unfortunately once you have submitted your application you’re unable to make any changes to the information you have provided. Should you need to make a change please email the Recruitment Team at ukrecruitment@mercer.com and we’ll try to note the change.
  • Can I get feedback on my application?
    Due to the volume of applications we receive unfortunately we’re unable to provide feedback at application stage. If you have completed a face to face interview we will ensure that feedback is provided to you.
  • How do I know the salary range of the role I am applying for?
    We don’t advertise our salary ranges, however we’ll be keen to understand your salary expectations and ensure they are aligned to what we’re offering.
  • Does Mercer provide support for ongoing education and development?
    At Mercer, we strive to develop our business while also developing our people. We are committed to providing the tools and resources our employees need to learn, develop, and succeed. This ongoing development allows employees to grow professionally and technically, which prepares them to do the best work for Mercer’s clients. Dependant on your role you may be eligible to receive financial support and study materials as well as a generous study leave package. In addition, you’ll be supported by your team and a study champion – a colleague who has been there before and can give you practical guidance and advice.
  • What interview process do you follow?
    Mercer’s recruitment process will vary depending on the role. We use a combination of telephone and face to face interviewing, assessment centres, psychometric testing, personality profiling and skills based assessments. The Recruitment Team will ensure that you are fully aware of what to expect at each stage of the interview process.
  • What should I expect during my interview with Mercer?
    You should expect to meet friendly, passionate, open and informative people who are keen to learn more about you and your background. There will be lots of questions – technical, values and competency based and also the opportunity for you to find out more about the role and Mercer as a company.
  • Can I claim travel expenses for attending an interview?
    Mercer’s policy is to not cover candidate’s travel expenses to and from interview unless circumstances are abnormal, for example if we request that you attend an interview in a location other than one local to the role.  If you are unsure please ensure that you speak with a member of the Recruitment Team.
  • Do you have any interview tips?
    Interviews can be quite daunting. Although interviews should be challenging, we will try to make the whole experience as smooth and comfortable as possible. Here are a few things to think about in advance:Read the job description in detail and make note of your strengths, skills and experience with the requirements of the job in mind.
    Familiarise yourself with our business and make sure you’ve researched the company thoroughly in order that you can demonstrate your fit and knowledge.
    Consider things that you’re really proud of in your career so far, or those situations that have challenged you and show what you’re capable of at work.
    When you’re asked a question during your interview, take your time to answer and think through what you want to say.
    Thoroughly think through your career history and why you have made particular choices as we’re keen to understand what makes you tick.
    Consider what it is about Mercer and the job you’re applying for that appeals to you.
    Make sure you’re on time and dressed smart.

  • What hours would I work?
    Our core hours are 9 – 5. Hours of work will vary depending upon your role but will be detailed in your contract. We pride ourselves on our commitment to flexibility to our staff and wherever possible will work with you to ensure your work and home commitments are met.
  • What happens if I get offered a job at Mercer?
    We will get in touch with you straight away! One of the Recruitment Team will contact you by telephone to let you know the good news; they’ll also talk you through what we’re offering you. Your offer of employment will be conditional upon us receiving satisfactory references and in some cases a satisfactory CRB check. We would advise that you make your current employer aware that they will receive a reference request from Mercer. We would also advise you not to formally resign until we confirm that satisfactory references and where necessary CRB clearance has been obtained. The Recruitment Team or the Recruiting Manager will be in touch with you throughout this period to make arrangements for your start date.
  • Do Mercer have a referencing process?
    We do. Your offer of employment will be conditional upon receipt of satisfactory references, verification of your identity and right to work in the UK and in some cases a CRB check.

If you have just finished education, references from your school, college or university will be fine.
  • Once I receive an offer what happens?
    You’ll have to return your signed contract and log onto our portal where you’ll need to complete a number of forms to allow us to have everything set up before you join.  We also use third party providers to conduct reference checks, criminal backround checks, credit checks and education validation.  We also conduct a health questionnaire, this is a great time to let us know if you need any reasonable adjustments made to your working environment you’ll need to let our Occupational Health specialist team know so they can work with your manager and HR to accommodate. 
  • Will my application/profile be shared with Mercer’s affiliated companies (Marsh, Oliver Wyman, Guy Carpenter)?
    No. While our companies work closely together, we don’t have a centralized recruiting function. Our businesses are quite different and the skill sets of the candidates we each seek reflect those differences.   • Do you offer work experience or work placements?
    In October 2014 we lead on a project to develop an Actuarial Technical apprenticeship standard in England. Read more about it here . When live, our apprenticeship roles will be listed on the Graduate page. We also run insight days, which are intended to give you a taste of what it’s like to work at Mercer and the graduate opportunities available.  If you are interested in attending an insight day at Mercer, please email your CV to graduates@mercer.com.  We also offer internships to students in their penultimate year and graduate positions.  These roles will be advertised on our graduate website, www.mercer.com/ukgrads
